John grew up in Hobart and attended St Virgils College before completing a combined Arts/Law degree at the University of Tasmania. He was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1984.
John was self-employed for three years before becoming a partner in former Hobart law firm, Wilson Dowd. A number of retirements led to John practising as sole principal of Wilson Dowd before a very successful merger with Butler McIntyre and Butler in 2001.

In his time away from the office, John enjoys sailing and can often be found travelling off the tourist route, exploring foreign and exotic locations with his wife and their four children. |
